The Way of St. James #69, 11th September 2021

I have not written here for several days because of some computer problems. But now, I am going to fill in the gaps.

Leaving Pola de Siero, it was still early morning. Although the distance is not far to my next stop, Oviedo, I wanted to get there early. So with the mist still rising from the fields, I was on my way. The distance was such that I was still out in the countryside, walking country lanes, and passing isolated country churches. But this could not last forever, and even though I was still several kilometres out from the city, there came a point where I could see it in front, initially newer suburbs, but heading towards the city itself.

It is boring walking along the streets into the city, but it had to be done. I went on through the traffic and reached the city centre, where my first stop was the cathedral. And Oviedo cathedral is a magnificent building. There was a time when Asturias was an independent principality, and the princes of Asturias were careful to make sure that the cathedral was well supported. The reliquary contains the echoes of those times.

It was the festival of San Mateo, and I took some time to sit in the square in front of the cathedral, listening to the music and just enjoying the moment. And then I went to my hotel. I was fortunate to get a room looking out on the cathedral and the buildings of the old city. And being in the city, I had access to a lavanderia, which was essential to me after so many days of walking. With everything cleaned, and after a good dinner, I was ready to go walking again on the morrow.

And the step count for the day was just 32,310.
